For decades LYC has developed great sailors by nurturing their love for being out on the water and providing them with the best in equipment, facilities, & instruction. We don’t just teach kids how to sail—we teach them to love sailing!
We offer junior sailing instruction from June to August for children of all skill levels on a variety of boats.
We can't wait to see you out on the water!
Developing the Next Generation
JUNIOR SAILING
We welcome all juniors from the ages of 5 to 17 whose parents or grandparents are active members of the club.
For your child's safety, we require that all participants pass a swim check on the first day of program.
From lessons in the cove in Optis to the independence of single-handed or double-handed cruising, we offer instruction on a variety of boats that will suit anyone's age or skill level.
Optimist Prams
These high-performance, single-handed boats are the most popular junior fleet in the world. Sailed by juniors aged 8-13, the Opti is a great choice for everyone from beginners to highly advanced racers and has become the standard for junior sailing on the east coast.
Laser/ILCA
As the world's most popular adult racing sailboat, the Laser/ILCA is a single-handed boat that rewards athleticism and tactical excellence. Typically sailed by sailors age 13 and up, our fleet includes Laser Radials and Laser 4.7s (for sailors under 110 pounds) so that no matter your size, the speedy Laser/ILCA is an option.
Sunfish
The Sunfish is a popular one-design sailboat that was first introduced in 1952. It is a small, lightweight boat with a simple, yet functional design. The boat has a triangular sail and a single, deep cockpit. The Sunfish is often used for racing, as well as recreational sailing.
420
The standard in high school and collegiate sailing, the 420 is a double-handed sailboat that combines the independence of sailing with the teamwork of a two-person boat. With the added excitement of flying a spinnaker and hanging out on the trapeze, it's no wonder the 420 has remained one of the most popular fleets for decades.
Whether you're going for gold at the Junior Olympics or have never stepped onto a sailboat, we have a program suited for you!
Junior Skipper Program
Junior Skippers is an introductory program for future sailors that introduces 5 & 6 year olds to the world of sailing. The program will require a swim test with a lifejacket this year and be a combination of land based and on-the-water activities. This program is going to be on a first come first serve basis that will be restricted to approximately 10 sailors. The Junior Skippers program will return this year as two 1-week ½ day sessions in the afternoons running Monday-Thursday. Junior Skippers are welcome to take one or both sessions.
Pre-Sailing Program
The beginner program is called Pre-Sailing. This program will use club owned Opti boats in the cove beach and the new RS Toura for group sailing adventures. This program is going to be on a first come first serve basis that will be restricted to approximately 10 sailors between the ages of 6-7. Pre-sailing program will run for 4 half days per week in the mornings. Pre-sailors who sign up for the 4 week program must do the first 4 weeks.
Junior Program
Designed for junior sailors ages 8+ and all skill levels, our junior program is aimed at improving your sailing ability whether that means learning the basics or refining advanced techniques. The class is divided by fleet -- Beginner Opti ("Opti Green"), Advanced Opti, Laser, Sunfish and 420 -- with experienced, dedicated instructors assigned to each. In addition to lessons in a small-group setting, our instructors accompany students to regattas at various yacht clubs around the Barnegat Bay. Program is four days per week with three full days of instruction and one three-quarter day of racing. Sailors are required to own their boat for this program.
