Letter from the Commodore: Member Volunteerism

Dear Members,

I would like to wish each of you and your families a Happy & Healthy New Year!  We are looking forward to a terrific season of sailing on Barnegat Bay (LYC Sunday race series, BBYRA Saturday race series, LYC Jr. Sailing, and other special Regattas), power-boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, time with family & friends, and the joy of being near the water.

Behind the scenes many volunteers have been at work preparing for this coming summer, including: Vice Commodore Tim Newman, Rear Commodore Brad Wright, Fleet Captain Ken Dolan, Treasurer Jack Costello, past Treasurer Bob Davis, Secretary Kathy West, and Assistant Secretary Ruthe Oliver; Past Commodores Hans Bonn, John Broderick, Mark Fertakos, Nancy Lopus, Chris Malzone, Nancy Seggel, Pat Wright, and Paul Wright; and all members of the Board of Governors--to name but a few, as well as all who have graciously volunteered to lead our committees.

One notable volunteer who has tirelessly served as the House Committee chair for the last four years has decided to step down from that role: we owe a debt of gratitude to Sheila Porcelli (and her husband Vincent) for their selfless commitment of service to our club.  They have elevated the dining & bar experience to a new level, which has been widely enjoyed by the entire club membership.  It has not been easy to fill these shoes, but in collaboration club member volunteers Cory Wingerter, Todd Elsasser, PC Nancy Seggel, Jack Costello, Roy Childers, John Applegate, Bob Davis and Ed Thayres are helping us move forward.

Our member volunteers are the lifeblood of LYC. Together we are advancing the framework of club operations to foster a pleasant experience for all members and to achieve a more cost-effective operation.  In doing so the club will continue to prosper. With that in mind, please consider your availability and step forward where you can contribute.  Many member volunteer opportunities are available, including but not limited to: Junior sailing, Beginner Adult Sailing, House (kitchen & bar), Woman’s Committee, Sunday Patrol Fleet, Building & Grounds, The Hut (an on-line store is under consideration), new Website (led by Nick Maida & Roy Childers), and the annual BBYRA LYC-hosted Regatta Day in August.

Your participation is vital to maintain the friendly, inclusive atmosphere at our club, which sets LYC apart from other clubs around the Bay.  Please consider where YOU can pitch in to help; increasing your personal involvement will benefit you AND LYC!

I’m always available to discuss any questions you may have.  Please contact me at 732-278-9324 or at george.b.anderson@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to get right back to you. If you have a specific area in which you would like to volunteer, please share this information via an email right away so you can become involved in the pre-season planning.

Looking forward to another season of boating fun and camaraderie —see you at the club!

Warmest regards,

George Anderson
